The Steps To Take For Dental Emergencies

My name is Kara Simmons and when my four-year old son fell and knocked out his front tooth, I was terrified. I quickly drove my son to the dental office so the dentist could treat my son. When we returned home, I began thinking about dental emergencies and what I needed to do if something ever happened again. I felt that if I was informed, then a dental emergency wouldn't be as frightening. I spent days doing research and I even spoke to my dentist about common types of dental emergencies. I wrote everything down so that I could refer to my notes when needed. I want to help other people learn about dental emergencies and the steps they should take. Although I don't wish a dental emergency on anyone, I do hope that if needed, my blog will be of help.

Having a busy schedule is no excuse for neglecting your dental health. If you neglect oral health care, you may suffer for it down the road if you develop a painful and costly needs for fillings or root canals.

Fortunately, it's not too hard to fit dental care into a busy schedule if you're vigilant and resourceful. The following are six ways to keep your teeth healthy despite a busy schedule.

1. Chew gum that contains xylitol

Did you know that xylitol -- a common ingredient in gums -- can help to prevent cavities by preventing bacterial proliferation in the mouth.

Chewing on gum that contains a good amount of xylitol when you don't have time for a brushing is a good way to clean your teeth in a hurry. While a brushing is always the best way to clean teeth, chewing gum with xylitol is a good substitute when you don't have time.

2. Set alarms for dental care reminders

If you're so busy and distracted that it's easy to forget brushings, set an alarm on your cell phone or smart phone to remind yourself. Discipline yourself to brush promptly when your reminder alarm goes off, and you'll find it easier to keep up proper oral health care. 

3. Look out for free moments

Even those with super busy schedules experience a dull moment here and there. Pack a toothbrush with you wherever you go and take advantage of downtime whenever it occurs to squeeze in a brushing now and then.

4. Adapt your diet

Your diet has a big impact on your oral health. If you can't keep up on brushings as well as you would like because of your schedule, you can cut back on sugary foods and beverages to minimize the chances that you'll develop problems like cavities as a result.

5. Brush before you get tired

If you're super tired in the evening after a busy workday, you should get in the habit of brushing an hour or two before bedtime. This will minimize the chances that you'll fall asleep before you handle your dental care responsibilities. 

6. Drink a lot of water

Drinking water helps to cleanse the mouth and remove food particles and potentially harmful bacteria. Staying hydrated isn't just good for your dental health. It's also great for the health of your skin and prevents issues related to dehydration like headaches and wrinkles.
